Musical Performance

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

There are three phases involved in the creative process of music: first, composition; then performance; and finally, listening and understanding. This course is intended to give students of any background the knowledge and skills to participate fully in the third phase of the creative process-hearing and understanding music. An ability to read or perform music is not necessary for the course. The goal is to educate students in the art of appreciating music.

In the course and the accompanying lessons, students will be looking at music throughout history. In addition, students will also be exposed to music from other cultures and learn to make connections between Western cultural and non-Western cultural music. Students will develop a familiarity with basic musical terms, as well as the ability to perceive aurally the various elements that are found in a piece of music. Students will become acquainted with major composers, genres, forms, and styles of music from the Middle Ages to the present.  Finally, students will critique music, their own and others, to fully synthesize their learning.
